EXHIBITION ON WATERCOLOURS & DRAWINGS IN THE “ATENEO BARCELONÉS”
…And I will conclude by talking about Jaume Gubianas, my only acquaintance and friend amongst these colleagues. I am mentioning this just to make you aware of the reasons why I might exaggerate my words. However, I believe that no one will deny his unquestionable promising conditions. He is a master of watercolour. The pictures on view are of such a doughy quality that they are quite close to oil paintings, and it is astonishing the way he gets them to represent a lifelike effect.
Although full of feeling and depth, it is from seriousness and an apparent simplicity that he perceives objects. Some research carried out on one of his portraits in sanguine drawing still increases his obvious possibilities to succeed. He shows predilection towards humbleness…

………In selected spots of the district of Horta, Gubianas shows his watercolours and his reflective and concrete appreciation of the natural -dull and rather obstinate -, due to his insistence on secondary details. The young woman’s head, by a dark red pencil made of haematites, excels the rest of the depicted figure…….

… A few boys and girls show their first fruits of their work in the Ateneo Barcelonés. These are pleasing to the eye, due to the hallmark of hope and future prospects of “seeing and discovering” different impressions when they dream.
One of the seven drawers, Jaume Gubianas, shows his “Estudio de Retrato” (A Study of a Portrait) and “Calavera de Perro” (Dog Skull), not a very nice issue, but with which he starts to emerge as a draftsman…
